Quick Answer

What is the best treatment for hip pain in Auckland?

At Auckland Wellness Centre in Rosedale, we treat hip pain through chiropractic adjustment, sports acupuncture, and targeted rehabilitation. Our approach addresses the biomechanical root cause (pelvic alignment, gluteal strength, lower-back contribution) rather than just the symptom. ACC patients pay a co-payment per session and no GP referral is required.

Understanding Hip Pain

Common Causes of Hip Pain We Treat

Hip pain rarely starts at the hip joint alone. The underlying cause is usually a combination of pelvic alignment issues, gluteal weakness, or lower-back contribution. Identifying the root cause is what separates lasting recovery from temporary relief.

Most Common

Pain When Walking or Going Up Stairs

Lateral hip pain when walking, climbing stairs, or lying on the affected side. Often from gluteal tendinopathy or hip impingement. Common in runners and patients over 40.

ACC Covered

Hip Labral & Impingement Issues

Groin or front-of-hip pain with deep squats, sitting, or pivoting. Often from femoroacetabular impingement (FAI). Many cases respond to conservative care without surgery.

ACC Covered

Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction

Pain at the back of the pelvis radiating into the buttock, often worse on one side. Common in pregnancy and after a fall. Responds well to combined chiropractic and acupuncture care.

Conservative Care

Hip Osteoarthritis

Stiffness, morning pain, or reduced range of motion from joint wear. Acupuncture has Level I evidence for chronic joint pain relief without medication side effects.

From Our Clinical Team

Why we don't recommend a cortisone injection or surgery as a first option

In our clinical experience treating hip pain in North Shore Auckland, we've seen a clear pattern: conservative care produces meaningful improvements when applied early. The 2017 systematic review in JAMA (Paige et al.) showed manual therapy combined with exercise produces meaningful improvements for hip pain, and the ACC Clinical Pathway explicitly recommends conservative management before more invasive options.

At AWC, every hip pain case follows our three-step integrated approach: (1) Biomechanical assessment to identify the root cause, we examine pelvic alignment, gluteal strength, hip range of motion, and lumbar contribution. (2) Targeted intervention combining chiropractic adjustment, sports acupuncture, and rehabilitation under one roof. (3) Functional rehabilitation with home exercises to prevent recurrence. This integrated model is what separates lasting recovery from temporary relief.

Common Questions

Hip Pain Treatment FAQ

Do I need a GP referral for hip pain treatment?
No. ACC chiropractic, sports acupuncture, and physiotherapy in NZ do not require GP referral for hip injuries. Book directly with us.
How long does it take for hip pain to improve with chiropractic care?
Recovery timelines vary by cause. Acute strains often improve within 2-4 weeks, while chronic patterns or arthritis-related pain may take longer. We re-assess regularly to ensure your care plan is working.
Is chiropractic safe for hip pain with arthritis or impingement?
Yes, when appropriately assessed first. We use gentle techniques and focus on hip mobility, gluteal strength, and pelvic alignment rather than aggressive joint manipulation.
Can I avoid hip replacement surgery?
Many hip conditions improve with conservative care, particularly tendinopathy, SI joint dysfunction, and early-stage arthritis. We refer for surgical consultation only when clinically indicated.
Is the clinic wheelchair accessible?
Yes. AWC Rosedale is wheelchair-accessible with ground-floor entry, accessible parking, and an accessible treatment room. Please let us know in advance if you need assistance.
Do you speak Korean or Chinese?
Yes. Korean and Chinese-speaking practitioners are available. Please request your preferred language at booking.
