ACC Covered No Referral Required

Evidence-based care for lasting relief — chiropractic, acupuncture, and spinal decompression under one roof.

What causes back pain?

Back pain affects the lumbar or thoracic spine and is the leading cause of disability worldwide. Auckland Wellness Centre treats back pain with a three-chiropractor team using evidence-based techniques including chiropractic adjustment, Win Trac 100 spinal decompression, Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP), Active Release Technique (ART), and acupuncture.

  • Dr. Jun (Principal Chiropractor, ART & TPI certified) treats disc-related and sports back pain with Win Trac 100 decompression.
  • Dr. Michael Blandy (Senior Chiropractor, CBP certified, 20 years experience) leads structural back correction with Denneroll traction.
  • Dr. Robin Won (PhD, 26 years experience) provides acupuncture for chronic and inflammatory back pain — ACC co-payment $20 ($10 for seniors 70+). Other acupuncturists: ACC co-payment $0.
  • ACC covers back pain caused by injury — chiropractic $40, decompression $30 per session. No GP referral required.

Evidence: A Cochrane systematic review (Furlan et al., 2015) found that acupuncture produces clinically meaningful short-term improvements in chronic low back pain compared to no treatment. The NZ Acute Low Back Pain Guide (ACC, 2004) recommends staying active and seeking manual therapy early.

Auckland Wellness Centre at E2 / 27 William Pickering Drive, Rosedale provides back pain treatment from a seven-practitioner team covering chiropractic, acupuncture, spinal decompression, and massage — open seven days, consultations in English, Korean, and Mandarin Chinese.

Chronic Back Pain

Bulging or herniated disc pressing on nerves. May cause sciatica or radiating leg pain.

Muscular Pain

Postural Back Pain

Pain caused by prolonged poor posture — desk work, tech neck, forward head carriage. Increasingly common.

Nerve Pain

Tingling, numbness, or shooting pain caused by nerve compression. Requires precise diagnosis.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Back Pain

Get clear answers before your first visit. Have more questions? Call us on 09 600 1939.

Back pain can be caused by many factors including poor posture, muscle strain, disc problems, spinal misalignment, arthritis, or injury. At AWC, our comprehensive assessment identifies the specific cause of your pain using physical examination, digital posture analysis, and X-ray when needed.
Acute back pain often improves within 2–4 weeks with treatment. Chronic conditions may require 2–6 months for significant structural correction. Your chiropractor will provide a clear timeline during the Report of Findings consultation.
Yes — if your back pain resulted from an accident or injury in New Zealand, ACC covers chiropractic ($40 co-pay), acupuncture ($0–$20 depending on practitioner), and spinal decompression ($30). No GP referral is required. Come directly to AWC and we'll register your claim on the spot.
Both can help, but chiropractors specialise in spinal alignment and nervous system function. At AWC, we offer additional modalities — acupuncture, spinal decompression, and soft tissue therapy — that physiotherapists typically don't provide, giving you a more comprehensive treatment approach under one roof.
In most cases, appropriate movement helps recovery — bed rest is rarely recommended for back pain. Our practitioners will guide you on which exercises are safe and beneficial for your specific condition, and which movements to avoid during your recovery phase.
Seek immediate care if you experience: loss of bladder or bowel control, progressive leg weakness, severe unrelenting pain that doesn't improve with rest, or back pain accompanied by fever. For persistent pain lasting more than a few days, professional assessment is recommended. Call AWC on 09 600 1939 if you're unsure.

Prevention

Preventing Back Pain — Practical Steps You Can Take Today

Back pain prevention is just as important as treatment. At Auckland Wellness Centre, we see patients every day whose back pain could have been prevented — or significantly reduced — with consistent, practical habits. Here are the evidence-based strategies our chiropractors recommend:

Ergonomic Workstation Setup

If you work at a desk, your posture throughout the day has a massive impact on spinal health. Keep your screen at eye level, feet flat on the floor, and take a 30-second stand-and-stretch break every 45 minutes. Our team can provide a personalised posture assessment to identify specific risk factors in your daily routine.

Core Strengthening and Spinal Stability

A strong core supports your spine and reduces the load on your discs and joints. Exercises such as planks, bird-dogs, and dead bugs are proven to reduce back pain recurrence. Your chiropractor at AWC will prescribe specific exercises based on your spinal assessment results.

Sleep Position and Mattress

Sleeping on your side with a pillow between your knees, or on your back with a pillow under your knees, helps maintain the natural curve of your lumbar spine. Avoid sleeping on your stomach, which forces your neck into rotation and flattens the lumbar curve.

Lifting Technique

Bend at the knees, not the waist. Keep the load close to your body. Avoid twisting while lifting. These principles apply whether you are lifting weights at the gym, picking up a child, or moving furniture. Most acute disc injuries we treat at AWC involve a combination of bending and twisting under load.

When to Act

When to See a Chiropractor for Back Pain

Not all back pain requires professional treatment — but certain warning signs mean you should book an assessment promptly. As North Shore Auckland’s integrated wellness clinic, we recommend seeking care if you experience:

  • Radiating pain (sciatica) — Pain, tingling, or numbness that travels down your leg, often indicating nerve compression
  • Pain lasting more than 2 weeks — Acute pain that does not improve with rest and over-the-counter medication
  • Pain after an accident or fallACC covers treatment for injuries sustained in New Zealand, no GP referral needed
  • Difficulty walking or standing — Functional limitation suggests a more serious structural issue
  • Pain worsening despite treatment — If physio, stretching, or medication is not working, a different diagnostic approach may be needed
  • Recurring episodes — Multiple back pain episodes suggest an underlying structural problem that needs correction, not just symptom relief

At AWC, your first visit includes a comprehensive consultation, digital posture assessment, and — if clinically indicated — X-ray analysis. You will receive a clear diagnosis and treatment plan on day one. Our team of three chiropractors and four acupuncturists work together to provide integrated care for complex back pain cases.

Patient Outcome

Disc Herniation — Surgery Avoidance

Before Treatment

A patient diagnosed with a severe disc bulge was strongly advised by a medical professional to undergo spinal surgery.

After Treatment

Following a 5-month non-surgical Spinal Decompression Therapy (Win Trac 100) protocol, the patient experienced significant pain reduction, successfully avoided surgery, and returned to normal daily activities.

How we treat back pain at AWC

We combine multiple evidence-based modalities to address the structural, neurological, and soft tissue components of back pain.

Chiropractic Adjustment

Precise spinal manipulation restores joint mobility, reduces nerve irritation, and relieves muscular tension. Our chiropractors use Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP) to identify and correct underlying biomechanical dysfunction.

Spinal Decompression

Non-surgical traction therapy using the Win Trac 100 creates gentle negative pressure to decompress spinal structures, reduce nerve irritation, and promote healing. Effective for a range of spinal conditions.

Active Release Technique (ART)

A soft tissue therapy that targets adhesions and scar tissue in the muscles and fascia. ART reduces muscular tension and restores normal movement patterns essential for long-term recovery.

Acupuncture

Traditional Chinese acupuncture stimulates the nervous system to reduce pain signals, decrease inflammation, and promote the body's natural healing response.

Postural Rehabilitation

Targeted exercises and Denneroll orthotics work alongside adjustments to retrain postural muscles and correct structural abnormalities that drive recurring pain.

Lifestyle Guidance

Integrative approach addressing nutritional, ergonomic, and movement habits. Small changes in how you sit, sleep, and move can dramatically reduce recurrence.
