Quick Answer
What is the best treatment for neck pain in Auckland?
At Auckland Wellness Centre on the North Shore, we treat neck pain through chiropractic adjustment, sports acupuncture, and targeted rehabilitation. Our approach addresses the biomechanical root cause (upper-thoracic mobility, postural pattern, shoulder blade alignment) rather than just the symptom. ACC patients pay a co-payment per session and no GP referral is required.
Fees
What it costs
The same fees apply at Rosedale and Milford. ACC covers injury-related care and our chiropractors lodge the claim for you.
A neck assessment that ends at "where does it hurt" gives you nothing to compare against later. We record the position of your head and the movement available to it, in units, on the first visit.
Step 1
Measure
PostureScreen captures your standing posture from the side and front, recording forward-head translation in millimetres along with head tilt and shoulder height. Rotation and lateral flexion are measured in degrees, both sides, and orthopaedic testing follows. A lateral cervical X-ray is referred where it is clinically indicated so the curve can be measured directly.
Step 2
Treat
The findings set the plan. Mirror image adjusting is directed at the levels that test as restricted, Denneroll cervical traction is prescribed where the curve is the issue rather than the movement, and Win Trac spinal decompression is used where a disc or nerve root is involved. Which of the three you get, and in what order, comes from the measurements.
Step 3
Re-measure
Posture capture and range of motion testing are repeated at 6 and 12 weeks against your own baseline. Degrees of rotation regained and millimetres of head position are the numbers we review with you, and the plan is revised on what they show.
Spinal measurement and X-ray analysis at Auckland Wellness Centre follow the Chiropractic BioPhysics protocol. Dr. Michael Blandy is one of about six CBP-trained chiropractors in New Zealand and reads the CBP line drawings on your images. Research into how closely structural change tracks with symptom change is still developing, so we report what we measure, what we do, and what your own follow-up numbers show. More on the method is on our posture correction page, and how a course of care is structured is on our care plans page. Every measurement named here is set out in full on our spinal and posture assessment page.
Understanding Neck Pain
Common Causes of Neck Pain We Treat
Neck pain rarely starts at the neck alone. The underlying cause is usually a combination of forward-head posture, upper-thoracic stiffness, shoulder blade dysfunction, or accumulated screen-time stress. Identifying the root cause is what separates lasting recovery from temporary relief.
Most Common
Can't Turn Head in the Morning
Sharp one-sided neck pain and limited rotation on waking. Often from sleeping posture, pillow height issues, or accumulated upper-trap tension. Common in patients with desk-based work.
ACC Covered
Whiplash & Cervical Strain
Sudden neck stiffness after a motor vehicle accident, rugby tackle, or sudden movement. Whiplash injuries are ACC-eligible and respond well to combined chiropractic and acupuncture care.
ACC Covered
Cervicogenic Headache & Tension
Headaches that start at the base of the skull and radiate forward, often with neck stiffness. Chiropractic manipulation has evidence (Bryans et al., 2014) for cervicogenic headache relief.
Conservative Care
"Tech Neck" & Postural Pain
Persistent neck and upper-back pain from prolonged screen time and forward-head posture. Conservative care addresses both the symptom and the postural pattern driving it.
Our Difference
Why North Shore Patients Choose AWC for Neck Pain
Most clinics treat neck pain with adjustments or acupuncture alone. We combine modalities under one roof, chiropractic, sports acupuncture, and rehabilitation, for a more complete biomechanical approach.
Integrated Modalities
Chiropractic, sports acupuncture, and rehabilitation under one roof, allowing your care team to combine treatments instead of working in silos.
ACC Registered
No GP referral required for neck injuries. Whiplash, work-related neck strain, and accident-related neck pain fully assessed for ACC eligibility at your first visit.
Multilingual Care
Korean and Chinese-speaking practitioners available for neck pain consultations, serving North Shore's diverse community.
Open 7 Days a Week
Same-week appointments available. Free parking on-site. Wheelchair accessible. Two minutes off Albany Expressway.
From Our Clinical Team
Why we don't recommend immediate imaging or strong medication
The frame is bolted to its base and the load is set by the practitioner. Sessions are short, and the seat position is adjusted so the neck stays neutral.
In our clinical experience treating neck pain in North Shore Auckland, we've seen a clear pattern: conservative care produces meaningful improvements when applied early. The 2014 systematic review in J Manipulative Physiol Ther (Bryans et al.) showed cervical spinal manipulation provides meaningful relief for neck pain and cervicogenic headache, and the ACC Clinical Pathway explicitly recommends conservative management before more invasive options.
At AWC, every neck pain case follows our three-step integrated approach: (1) Biomechanical assessment to identify the root cause, we examine cervical alignment, upper-thoracic mobility, shoulder blade function, and postural patterns. (2) Targeted intervention combining chiropractic adjustment, sports acupuncture, cervical spinal decompression, and rehabilitation under one roof. (3) Functional rehabilitation with home exercises to prevent recurrence. This integrated model is what separates lasting recovery from temporary relief.

How long does it take for neck pain to improve with chiropractic care?
Recovery timelines vary by cause. Mechanical neck strain often improves within the first 1-3 sessions, while whiplash or chronic cervicogenic patterns may take longer. We re-assess regularly to ensure your care plan is working.
Is chiropractic safe after a whiplash injury?
Yes, when appropriately assessed first. We screen for red flags (cervical instability, severe neurological signs) and use gentle low-force techniques for acute whiplash. We coordinate with your GP if imaging is clinically indicated.
Can I avoid an MRI or specialist referral for neck pain?
Most neck pain resolves with conservative care and does not require imaging. We refer for MRI or specialist consultation only when red flags are present or progress is not as expected.
Is the clinic wheelchair accessible?
Yes. AWC Rosedale is wheelchair-accessible with ground-floor entry, accessible parking, and an accessible treatment room. Please let us know in advance if you need assistance.
Do you speak Korean or Chinese?
Yes. Korean and Chinese-speaking practitioners are available. Please request your preferred language at booking.
