Scoliosis Treatment Auckland

Evidence-based care for lasting relief — chiropractic, acupuncture, and spinal decompression under one roof.

What causes scoliosis?

Scoliosis is an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine that can cause pain, postural imbalance, and reduced mobility. Auckland Wellness Centre provides non-surgical scoliosis management using Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP), Denneroll 3D traction, digital posture analysis, and targeted chiropractic adjustment.

  • Dr. Michael Blandy (Senior Chiropractor, CBP certified, 20 years experience) leads scoliosis assessment using digital X-ray analysis and Denneroll traction protocols.
  • Dr. Brian Bae (Junior Chiropractor) supports posture correction with X-ray and photographic posture analysis.
  • CBP is one of the most researched chiropractic techniques, with published protocols specifically for scoliosis management.
  • ACC covers scoliosis-related treatment caused by injury — chiropractic co-payment $40. Private initial consultation $105.

Evidence: A case series published in the Journal of Physical Therapy Science (Harrison et al., 2017) demonstrated that Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP) mirror-image exercises and traction produced measurable reductions in Cobb angle in adult scoliosis patients.

Auckland Wellness Centre at E2 / 27 William Pickering Drive, Rosedale is one of the few North Shore clinics offering Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP) for structural scoliosis assessment and correction — ACC registered, open seven days.

Scoliosis Management in Auckland | Auckland Wellness Centre

Expert Chiropractic, Acupuncture, Spinal Decompression, and ART® for Spinal Health

Understanding Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a condition where the spine curves sideways, often in an “S” or “C” shape. It affects about 2–3% of the population and can range from mild to severe.

At Auckland Wellness Centre in Rosedale, we specialize in non-surgical scoliosis management. Our team of chiropractors, acupuncturists, and rehabilitation experts offers a comprehensive, holistic approach to help patients across Albany, North Shore, and greater Auckland live more comfortably and actively.

Causes of Scoliosis

The cause of scoliosis can vary:

  • Idiopathic (unknown cause) – the most common type
  • Congenital (present at birth due to spinal formation issues)
  • Neuromuscular (associated with conditions like cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy)
  • Degenerative (age-related wear and tear on the spine)

Identifying the underlying cause helps guide the best care plan for each individual.

Signs and Symptoms of Scoliosis

You might notice:

  • Uneven shoulders or waist
  • A visible curve in the spine
  • One hip appearing higher than the other
  • Back pain or fatigue after standing or sitting
  • Restricted flexibility and range of motion
  • In severe cases, breathing or heart function may be affected

Early intervention helps slow progression and reduce discomfort.

How Chiropractic Care Helps Scoliosis

Chiropractic care doesn't "cure" scoliosis, but it can:

  • Improve spinal mobility
  • Reduce muscle tension and joint stiffness
  • Enhance postural alignment
  • Support better nervous system function
  • Decrease pain and inflammation

We focus on helping you move better, feel better, and maintain an active lifestyle with minimal discomfort.

Our Multidisciplinary Approach to Scoliosis

Comprehensive Assessment

Every patient receives a detailed evaluation:

  • Full consultation and health history
  • Postural analysis and functional movement testing
  • Referral for spinal X-rays or imaging if needed

This detailed assessment helps us understand your unique spinal structure and create a personalized plan.

Specialized Techniques for Scoliosis Care

1. Chiropractic Adjustments

Gentle, specific adjustments realign restricted joints, improving spinal mechanics and nervous system flow. We tailor the adjustment style and frequency based on your individual spine's needs.

2. Spinal Decompression Therapy

Spinal Decompression Therapy is a non-surgical treatment that gently stretches the spine to:

  • Relieve pressure on compressed discs and pinched nerves
  • Improve nutrient flow into spinal discs, promoting healing
  • Reduce nerve-related pain like numbness, tingling, or weakness
  • Create more space in the spinal canal and nerve pathways

For scoliosis patients, decompression can help alleviate associated disc bulges, nerve irritation, and back pain by reducing asymmetrical stress on the spine.

At Auckland Wellness Centre, we use advanced decompression tables that allow highly controlled, computer-assisted stretching cycles. Patients lie comfortably while targeted traction is applied in a gentle, rhythmic pattern it’s relaxing, and many report significant relief after just a few sessions.

Spinal Decompression Therapy is especially effective when combined with chiropractic adjustments and mobility work, creating a comprehensive approach to scoliosis symptom management.

3. Active Release Techniques (ART®)

Active Release Techniques (ART®) is a highly specialized, hands-on soft tissue therapy that targets muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves affected by abnormal adhesions (scar tissue).

Scoliosis often causes muscles on one side of the spine to become overly tight and shortened, while muscles on the opposite side weaken and stretch. This muscular imbalance can cause pain, stiffness, and further postural distortion.

ART® specifically addresses:

  • Chronic muscle tightness and spasms
  • Restricted joint movement
  • Nerve entrapments (e.g., sciatica-like symptoms)
  • Decreased flexibility and strength

During an ART® session, the practitioner uses precise manual pressure combined with patient-guided movements to break up adhesions and restore normal tissue movement.
This not only relieves pain but also improves mobility, enhances posture, and reduces stress on the spine critical elements in managing scoliosis effectively.

Our chiropractors at Auckland Wellness Centre are trained in ART® and use it in conjunction with chiropractic care to optimize functional improvements.

4. Corrective Exercises and Postural Training

We design individualized rehabilitation programs focusing on:

  • Core strength
  • Mid-back (thoracic) mobility
  • Hip and shoulder stability
  • Neuromuscular control (training the brain-body connection)

By strengthening the right muscles and re-patterning movement habits, we help your body support a more balanced spine naturally.

5. Acupuncture for Pain Management

Acupuncture complements chiropractic care by:

  • Reducing inflammation
  • Relaxing tight muscles
  • Relieving pain naturally
  • Promoting endorphin release (your body’s natural painkillers)

At Auckland Wellness Centre, acupuncture is ACC-covered, with no GP referral required.

6. Therapeutic Massage

Massage therapy helps manage scoliosis-related muscular imbalances by:

  • Improving blood circulation
  • Reducing muscle stiffness and tension
  • Enhancing relaxation
  • Supporting the corrective work done during chiropractic care

How we treat scoliosis at AWC

We combine multiple evidence-based modalities to address the structural, neurological, and soft tissue components of scoliosis.

Chiropractic Adjustment

Precise spinal manipulation restores joint mobility, reduces nerve irritation, and relieves muscular tension. Our chiropractors use Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP) to identify and correct underlying biomechanical dysfunction.

Spinal Decompression

Non-surgical traction therapy using the Win Trac 100 creates gentle negative pressure to decompress spinal structures, reduce nerve irritation, and promote healing. Effective for a range of spinal conditions.

Active Release Technique (ART)

A soft tissue therapy that targets adhesions and scar tissue in the muscles and fascia. ART reduces muscular tension and restores normal movement patterns essential for long-term recovery.

Acupuncture

Traditional Chinese acupuncture stimulates the nervous system to reduce pain signals, decrease inflammation, and promote the body's natural healing response.

Postural Rehabilitation

Targeted exercises and Denneroll orthotics work alongside adjustments to retrain postural muscles and correct structural abnormalities that drive recurring pain.

Lifestyle Guidance

Integrative approach addressing nutritional, ergonomic, and movement habits. Small changes in how you sit, sleep, and move can dramatically reduce recurrence.
