The Approach

What Is Children's Chiropractic Care?

Children's chiropractic care adapts the principles of structural assessment and spinal correction to suit a developing body. The forces used are substantially lighter than adult treatment — a child's spine is more flexible and responsive, meaning less force is needed to achieve the same clinical effect.

At Auckland Wellness Centre, our approach to treating children is grounded in evidence-based practice. We do not apply high-velocity adult manipulation to young spines. Instead, we use low-force adjustment, gentle mobilisation, and postural rehabilitation exercises appropriate to the child's age, size, and presenting condition.

Our chiropractors are experienced in identifying when a child's complaint is within the scope of chiropractic care and when onward referral to a paediatrician or specialist is the appropriate course. We communicate openly with parents at every stage.

Our Approach to Young Patients

Low-Force Techniques

Child-appropriate force — lighter, gentler, and adapted to the developing spine at every age.

Postural Correction

CBP-based spinal assessment identifies postural faults early, before they become structural problems.

Scoliosis Screening

Visual and functional screen for spinal curvature — early detection improves long-term outcomes significantly.

Exercise Rehab

Age-appropriate corrective exercises that children can do at home — building strength and habit together.

Conditions We Treat

Common Conditions in Children and Teenagers

Modern childhood — heavy bags, screen time, and competitive sport — places unusual loads on growing spines. These are the most common conditions we see in our younger patients.

Growing Pains

Persistent aching in the legs, especially at night, is common in children aged 3 to 12. While often benign, chiropractic assessment can identify whether joint restrictions or muscular imbalances are contributing to discomfort.

Text Neck and Screen Posture

Extended periods looking down at phones or tablets causes forward head posture — placing up to 27kg of load on the cervical spine at a 45-degree angle. Early correction prevents long-term spinal change.

Gaming and Study Posture

Prolonged sitting with rounded shoulders and a flexed lower back is increasingly common in school-age children. Postural correction and ergonomic guidance can reverse early changes before they become fixed.

Mild Scoliosis Screening

Spinal curvature identified early in adolescence can be monitored and managed more effectively. We offer functional scoliosis screening and referral pathways where specialist input is required.

Youth Sports Injuries

Young athletes in rugby, football, swimming, gymnastics, and other sports present with sprains, muscle strains, and joint irritation. ACC covers sports injuries — no GP referral required.

Backpack-Related Back Pain

Heavy school bags carried asymmetrically create uneven spinal loading. We assess posture, advise on bag weight and carrying technique, and treat the resulting spinal and shoulder tension.

Neck and Upper Back Pain

Persistent neck pain or upper back stiffness in a teenager or child is not normal and warrants assessment. Common causes include postural strain, sleeping position, and sedentary habits.

Headaches

Cervicogenic headaches — originating from the neck — are increasingly common in teenagers, particularly those who spend significant time on screens. Cervical adjustment can significantly reduce frequency and severity.

Decision Guide

When to Bring Your Child to See Us

Parents often ask how they know when a complaint warrants a chiropractic assessment. These are common presentations where we can help.

Persistent neck or back complaints lasting more than one week

Pain that does not resolve with rest, or that keeps returning, suggests an underlying structural issue that responds well to early treatment.

Visible postural asymmetry — one shoulder higher, spine visibly curved

Noticeable postural asymmetry in a growing child should be assessed promptly. Early identification of scoliosis or postural imbalance significantly improves outcomes.

After a sports injury — particularly in contact sports

A chiropractic assessment after a rugby collision, gymnastics fall, or swimming shoulder strain can identify joint or soft tissue injury that needs treatment to prevent re-injury.

Forward head posture from screens, study, or gaming

If you notice your child consistently holding their head forward and down, early postural intervention prevents the cervical curve loss that makes correction progressively harder over time.

Frequent headaches in a teenager

Recurrent tension or cervicogenic headaches in adolescents are often responsive to cervical chiropractic treatment and postural correction.

Your Child's Visit

How a Children's Chiropractic Appointment Works

Parent Consultation and Case History

We begin by speaking with you as the parent or guardian. We take a detailed history of the complaint, the child's activity level, school habits, sleep position, and any relevant family history. You are welcome to be present throughout the entire appointment.

Postural and Spinal Assessment

A full postural assessment is carried out, including spinal curvature screening, range of motion testing, and where indicated, digital postural analysis with before-and-after tracking. This gives a clear, objective picture of the child's spinal alignment.

Gentle, Age-Appropriate Treatment

Treatment uses low-force techniques selected for the child's age and presenting condition. No high-velocity manipulation is applied to young spines. The child is always in control — we move at their pace and ensure they feel comfortable throughout.

Home Exercise Plan for the Family

We prescribe simple, age-appropriate exercises and provide ergonomic guidance — screen height, desk setup, bag adjustment — that parents can implement at home to support the treatment outcomes achieved in the clinic.

Progress Review and Long-Term Monitoring

For postural cases, we track progress with repeat assessments. For acute injuries, we discharge once functional goals are met. We communicate clearly with parents about what to expect and when improvement should be evident.

Frequently Asked

Children's Chiropractic — Parent Questions

When delivered by a qualified, NZCC-registered chiropractor using age-appropriate techniques, chiropractic care for children has an excellent safety record. We do not apply the same forces used for adult spinal manipulation to children's spines. A child's spine is more flexible and responds to much lighter input. Our practitioners are trained to select the correct technique and force level for each age group, from toddlers through to teenagers.
There is no minimum age restriction for chiropractic assessment. We treat children from toddler age upwards, adjusting our techniques to suit every stage of development. For very young children, we use light fingertip pressure — a technique quite different from what an adult would receive. For school-age children and teenagers, we use progressive techniques appropriate to their musculoskeletal development.
Yes — and early intervention makes a significant difference. Forward head posture from screen use, when caught in the teenage years, responds well to cervical chiropractic adjustment combined with postural rehabilitation and ergonomic guidance. The natural cervical curve, if not yet significantly reduced, can be maintained and restored. Waiting until adulthood means working against years of established muscle and ligament adaptation.
Yes. Sports injuries occurring during play, training, or physical education in New Zealand are covered by ACC, regardless of the child's age or residency status. AWC can register the claim on your child's first visit — no GP visit is required beforehand. The co-payment is $40 per session. We handle the paperwork so you can focus on your child's recovery.
Yes — absolutely. Parents or guardians are welcome and encouraged to be present throughout the entire appointment for children of any age. We believe transparent, family-centred care leads to better outcomes. We will explain every step of the assessment and treatment before we proceed, and we work at the child's pace to ensure they feel safe and in control.
