Quick Answer

What is the best treatment for headache and migraine in Auckland?

At Auckland Wellness Centre on the North Shore, we treat headache and migraine through chiropractic adjustment, sports acupuncture, and targeted rehabilitation. Our approach addresses the biomechanical root cause (cervical alignment, upper-thoracic mobility, postural patterns) rather than just the symptom. ACC patients pay a co-payment per session and no GP referral is required.

Measured Care

What we measure before we treat a neck-related headache

Most headache care starts with a description of the pain. Ours starts with a measurement. Where the pattern points to the neck, the structures involved can be photographed, angled and written down, then checked again later against your own starting numbers.

Step 1

Measure

We photograph your standing posture with PostureScreen and record forward-head translation in millimetres alongside head and shoulder tilt. Cervical range of motion and orthopaedic testing follow. Where it is clinically indicated, we refer you for a lateral cervical X-ray so the curve can be measured in degrees rather than estimated by eye.

Step 2

Treat

Those numbers set the plan. Mirror image adjusting is directed at the segments that test as restricted, Denneroll cervical traction is prescribed for the curve itself, and Win Trac spinal decompression is added where a disc is involved. Very few Auckland clinics run all three, and combining them is the point rather than any one on its own.

Step 3

Re-measure

The posture capture and the range of motion testing are repeated at 6 and 12 weeks and compared against your baseline, not against an average. If the measurements are not moving, the plan changes rather than continuing unchanged.

Spinal measurement and X-ray analysis at Auckland Wellness Centre follow the Chiropractic BioPhysics protocol. Dr. Michael Blandy is one of about six CBP-trained chiropractors in New Zealand and reads the CBP line drawings on your images. Research into how closely structural change tracks with symptom change is still developing, so we report what we measure, what we do, and what your own follow-up numbers show. More on the method is on our posture correction page, and how a course of care is structured is on our care plans page. Every measurement named here is set out in full on our spinal and posture assessment page. If you are still deciding which kind of provider to see, our guide to headache and migraine clinics in Auckland compares the options and what each one covers.

Understanding Headache & Migraine

Common Causes of Headache & Migraine We Treat

Many headaches and migraines are driven by the neck, not the head. The underlying cause is often cervical joint dysfunction, upper-thoracic stiffness, or chronic postural strain. Addressing this is what separates lasting relief from temporary medication.

Most Common

Headache Starting at the Base of the Skull

Pain at the back of the head that radiates forward to the temples or eye, often with neck stiffness. The hallmark of cervicogenic headache.

Conservative Care

Tension-Type Headache

Dull, band-like pressure across the forehead or behind the eyes, often from prolonged screen time or stress. Responds well to combined cervical and trigger-point care.

Conservative Care

Migraine With Neck Trigger

Throbbing one-sided headache, sometimes with nausea or light sensitivity. Acupuncture has supporting evidence (Posadzki & Ernst, 2011) for migraine frequency reduction.

Conservative Care

Posture-Driven "Tech Neck" Headache

Persistent headaches that worsen after long screen sessions. Conservative care addresses both the headache and the postural pattern driving it.

Our Difference

Why North Shore Patients Choose AWC for Headache & Migraine

Most clinics treat headaches with medication alone. We combine modalities under one roof, chiropractic, sports acupuncture, and rehabilitation, to address the cervical and postural drivers.

Integrated Modalities

Chiropractic, sports acupuncture, and rehabilitation under one roof, allowing your care team to combine treatments instead of working in silos.

ACC Registered

No GP referral required for post-injury headaches. Whiplash-related and concussion-related headaches assessed for ACC eligibility at your first visit.

Multilingual Care

Korean and Chinese-speaking practitioners available for headache consultations, serving North Shore's diverse community.

Open 7 Days a Week

Same-week appointments available. Free parking on-site. Wheelchair accessible. Two minutes off Albany Expressway.

From Our Clinical Team

Why we don't recommend relying on medication alone

In our clinical experience treating headache and migraine in North Shore Auckland, we've seen a clear pattern: conservative care produces meaningful improvements when applied early. The 2011 systematic review in Cephalalgia (Posadzki & Ernst) showed cervical manipulation and acupuncture reduce headache frequency in patients with cervicogenic and tension-type headaches, and the ACC Clinical Pathway explicitly recommends conservative management before more invasive options.

At AWC, every headache and migraine case follows our three-step integrated approach: (1) Biomechanical assessment to identify the root cause, we examine cervical alignment, upper-thoracic mobility, trigger-point pattern, and postural drivers. (2) Targeted intervention combining chiropractic adjustment, sports acupuncture, and rehabilitation under one roof. (3) Functional rehabilitation with home exercises to prevent recurrence. This integrated model is what separates lasting recovery from temporary relief.

Common Questions

Headache & Migraine FAQ

Do I need a GP referral for headache treatment?
No. ACC chiropractic, sports acupuncture, and physiotherapy in NZ do not require GP referral for post-injury headaches.
How long does it take for headaches to improve with chiropractic and acupuncture?
Cervicogenic headaches often improve within 2-4 weeks of consistent care. Chronic migraines may need 6-12 weeks to see meaningful frequency reduction.
Is chiropractic safe for migraine?
Yes, when appropriately assessed first. We use gentle techniques for migraine patients and screen for red flags (sudden severe headache, neurological signs) that require immediate medical referral.
Can I reduce migraine frequency without daily medication?
Many migraine patients reduce frequency with conservative care addressing cervical drivers, trigger points, and posture. Acupuncture has supporting evidence for migraine frequency reduction.
Is the clinic wheelchair accessible?
Yes. AWC Rosedale is wheelchair-accessible with ground-floor entry, accessible parking, and an accessible treatment room. Please let us know in advance if you need assistance.
Do you speak Korean or Chinese?
Yes. Korean and Chinese-speaking practitioners are available. Please request your preferred language at booking.
