No GP Referral Needed — Here's Why
One of the most common misunderstandings about ACC chiropractic is that you need a GP referral first. You do not. ACC-registered chiropractors are classified as "first-contact practitioners" — the same status as GPs. You can walk into any ACC-registered chiropractic clinic, be assessed, have a claim lodged, and begin treatment, all in one appointment.
This matters because getting a GP appointment in Auckland can take days or weeks. If you have a fresh injury, starting chiropractic care early leads to better outcomes. ACC's framework specifically supports this by allowing direct access to registered practitioners.
What "First-Contact Practitioner" Means
In New Zealand's healthcare system, certain registered health professions have first-contact status — meaning they are authorised to assess, diagnose, and treat patients without requiring a referral from another health professional. Chiropractors, physiotherapists, and GPs all hold this status under ACC's provider framework.
When you visit an ACC-registered chiropractor, they will assess your injury, determine if it meets ACC's eligibility criteria, complete the ACC45 claim form, and lodge it electronically with ACC. You leave with your claim already in process.

Tip: Bring photo ID to your first appointment
To lodge an ACC claim, your chiropractor needs to verify your identity. A New Zealand driver licence, passport, or 18+ card is sufficient. You do not need to bring any ACC paperwork — we handle everything.
