Frequently asked

Questions we get about Easy-Claim

Does Southern Cross cover chiropractic in New Zealand?

Yes, Southern Cross covers chiropractic in New Zealand under some plans. UltraCare pays $60 per visit up to $300 per claims year. Wellbeing One and Wellbeing Two cover chiropractic up to a $500 combined annual maximum when the optional Body Care Module is added. HealthEssentials reimburses 75% of chiropractic costs up to a $250 combined Self care maximum per year. RegularCare and KiwiCare do not include chiropractic. Your chiropractor must be registered with the New Zealand Chiropractic Board. All three AWC chiropractors (Dr. Jun, Dr. Michael Blandy, Dr. Brian Bae) meet this requirement.

Does Southern Cross cover acupuncture in New Zealand?

Yes, some Southern Cross plans cover acupuncture. Wellbeing One and Wellbeing Two with the Body Care Module cover acupuncture up to a $500 combined annual maximum. HealthEssentials reimburses 75% of acupuncture costs up to $250 combined per year. UltraCare, RegularCare, and KiwiCare do not list acupuncture as a benefit. Your acupuncturist must be registered with the Chinese Medicine Council of New Zealand (CMCNZ) or the NZ Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture Society (NZCMAS). All four AWC acupuncturists are CMCNZ-registered, including Dr. Robin Won PhD (NZ’s only Acupuncture Specialist).

Does Southern Cross cover remedial massage?

Yes, under Wellbeing One and Wellbeing Two with the Body Care Module (up to $500 combined per year across natural therapies) and under HealthEssentials (75% reimbursed up to $250 combined). Your massage therapist must hold Massage New Zealand Level 6 or higher. AWC’s registered remedial massage therapist meets this standard, so visits here are eligible for Easy-Claim.

My plan is not on the list, can I still claim?

Possibly. Southern Cross sells many plans through employer schemes and group policies that are not published on their public website. If your plan is through your employer or an association, call us on 09 600 1939 before your visit and we can verify your cover with Southern Cross directly.

What if I have both ACC and Southern Cross?

If your visit is for an injury covered by ACC, we process the ACC claim first (ACC patients pay only $40 for chiropractic, $0 to $20 for acupuncture). If ACC does not cover the full fee, some Southern Cross plans include an Accident and treatment injury top-up clause that can contribute to the remainder, subject to your policy terms.

We will always process ACC first where eligible, because it gives you the best out-of-pocket outcome. If you want us to check the top-up option, please ask at reception.

What happens if I go over my annual limit?

Once your annual Southern Cross limit for a benefit is reached, any further costs in that claims year are paid by you in full at private rates. Your limit resets on your policy’s claims anniversary date, which you can find in the MySouthernCross app.

If you are approaching your limit, we can tell you the remaining balance at reception before your next visit.

Do I need a GP referral to claim?

Not for chiropractic, acupuncture, or massage at AWC. Southern Cross Easy-Claim for these services does not require a GP referral. You can book directly.

Can I claim for my family members on the same policy?

Yes. Each person covered under a Southern Cross policy has their own individual annual limits. When a dependant visits AWC, they should bring the Southern Cross member card (or know the member number) and their own photo ID. For under-18s, a parent or guardian can accompany them.

Does Easy-Claim cost anything extra?

No. There is no additional fee for using Easy-Claim at AWC. You pay the same private rate as any other patient, and your Southern Cross entitlement is applied directly to the bill at the time of your visit.

How do I know if my Wellbeing plan has the Body Care Module?

The Body Care Module is an optional add-on. Without it, Wellbeing One and Wellbeing Two do not cover chiropractic, acupuncture, or massage. Check your plan summary in the MySouthernCross app, or call Southern Cross on 0800 800 181. Alternatively, call us on 09 600 1939 and we can verify for you before your visit.

Which AWC services are covered by Southern Cross Easy-Claim?

Three services, provided your plan includes cover for each: chiropractic (with a chiropractor registered with the New Zealand Chiropractic Board), acupuncture (with an acupuncturist registered with CMCNZ or NZCMAS), and registered remedial massage (with a therapist registered at Massage New Zealand Level 6 or higher). All of our practitioners meet these registration requirements.
