Is Acupuncture Covered by ACC in New Zealand? (2026)

Yes — acupuncture is covered by ACC in New Zealand. Most people assume ACC only pays for physio or visits to a GP, but acupuncture has been part of the ACC treatment landscape for years. If you have suffered an accident-related injury and have not yet explored ACC acupuncture, you may be leaving a valuable treatment option on the table.

How ACC Acupuncture Works

The Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) is New Zealand’s national no-fault accident insurer. When you are injured in an accident — whether at work, in a car, playing sport, or at home — ACC will fund a range of treatments to help you recover. Acupuncture is one of those funded treatments, provided certain criteria are met.

The process is simpler than most people expect. Here is how it works step by step:

1
Visit an ACC-Registered Acupuncturist Directly

You do not need a referral from your GP. You can walk straight into any clinic with ACC-registered acupuncturists and book an appointment. This is called direct access.

2
Your Acupuncturist Lodges the ACC45 Form

The ACC45 is the standard injury claim form. Your practitioner completes and submits this on your behalf during your first visit, documenting the nature and cause of your injury.

3
ACC Covers the Treatment Cost

Once approved, ACC funds the bulk of each treatment session. The clinic invoices ACC directly. You only pay any applicable surcharge (which varies by clinic and practitioner).

4
Treatment Continues Until Recovered

Your practitioner can request further sessions if clinically justified. ACC may approve an initial block of 6–12 sessions, with extensions based on your progress.

No GP Referral Required

You can book your first ACC acupuncture appointment without seeing a doctor first. The acupuncturist handles the claim paperwork. Bring your accident details — date, nature, and location of injury — to your first appointment.

What Conditions Are Covered?

ACC acupuncture is available for injuries that result from an identifiable accident. The defining question is always: did a specific event cause this injury? If yes, it is likely covered. If the condition developed gradually without a triggering accident, it falls outside ACC’s scope.

Typically Covered by ACC

  • Whiplash and neck pain following a car accident or sports collision
  • Sports injuries — sprains, muscle tears, joint injuries sustained during play
  • Work-related injuries — lifting injuries, falls at work, repetitive strain from a specific incident
  • Fall injuries — hip, knee, wrist, shoulder pain from a fall
  • Lower back pain resulting from a specific accident or lifting incident
  • Headaches and concussion-related symptoms following head trauma
  • Soft tissue injuries anywhere in the body with a clear accident cause

NOT Covered by ACC

  • Chronic conditions that developed over time without an accident (e.g., degenerative disc disease)
  • Stress, anxiety, insomnia, or mental health conditions
  • General wellness acupuncture or preventative care
  • Conditions related to illness or disease rather than injury
  • Fertility acupuncture or hormonal support
  • Pregnancy-related symptoms without a triggering accident
Unsure If Your Condition Qualifies?

The best approach is to visit an ACC-registered acupuncturist and let them assess your situation. They can determine at the initial consultation whether your injury meets ACC criteria. If it does not, they will explain your private treatment options.

ACC Acupuncture Costs in NZ

One of the most common questions we hear is: “How much will I actually pay?” The answer depends on the clinic. ACC pays the bulk of the treatment cost directly to the provider. What you pay is called the patient surcharge — an additional amount that clinics are permitted to charge on top of the ACC rate.

Across New Zealand, ACC acupuncture surcharges typically range from $0 to $30 per session. Some clinics charge nothing on top of ACC; others add a surcharge to cover clinic overheads or to reflect the seniority and experience of the practitioner.

Fee Type Who Pays Typical Amount
ACC Treatment Rate ACC pays clinic directly Covered by ACC
Patient Surcharge You pay at the clinic $0 – $30 per visit (NZ average)
Initial Consultation You pay (may vary) Some clinics charge a higher initial fee

The ACC rate itself is set by ACC and reviewed periodically. Clinics receive this payment automatically; it does not come out of your pocket. Your only out-of-pocket cost is the surcharge, which varies by provider.

Appointment Type Duration Price
Initial Consultation 60 min $80
Follow-up (standard) 60 min $70
Follow-up (short) 30 min $40

ACC vs Private Acupuncture — When to Choose Each

Whether you use ACC or private acupuncture depends on your situation. Both pathways are valuable; the right choice depends on the nature of your condition and your treatment goals.

ACC Acupuncture
  • Injury from an identifiable accident
  • Whiplash, sports injury, work injury, fall
  • Cost: $0–$20 surcharge at AWC
  • No GP referral needed
  • Treatment quantity approved by ACC
  • Focus: injury recovery
Private Acupuncture
  • Chronic conditions with no accident cause
  • Stress, insomnia, fertility, hormonal health
  • Pregnancy support
  • Initial $80, Follow-up $70 / $40
  • Unlimited sessions — patient choice
  • Focus: health & wellbeing

Many patients at AWC move between both pathways at different stages of life. You might use ACC acupuncture to recover from a sports injury, then continue as a private patient for ongoing stress management or preventative wellness care. Our acupuncturists will always advise which pathway is appropriate for your situation.

Finding an ACC-Registered Acupuncturist

Not all acupuncturists in New Zealand are registered to provide ACC treatment. Registration requires specific qualifications and ongoing compliance with ACC’s provider standards. Here is how to verify that a clinic or acupuncturist is ACC-registered:

  • Check the ACC Provider Directory: ACC maintains an online register of approved treatment providers. Search for “acupuncturist” in your area at acc.co.nz.
  • Ask the clinic directly: Any ACC-registered clinic will immediately confirm their status. If they are hesitant, that is a red flag.
  • Check professional registration: Look for registration with the Acupuncture Council of New Zealand (ACNZ). All ACNZ-registered practitioners meet the standards required for ACC work.
  • Ask about the claim process: An ACC-experienced clinic will walk you through the ACC45 form and will know exactly which conditions qualify.
