Quick Answer

What is the best treatment for knee pain in Auckland?

At Auckland Wellness Centre in Rosedale, we treat knee pain through chiropractic adjustment, sports acupuncture, and targeted rehabilitation. Our approach addresses the biomechanical root cause (hip alignment, foot pronation, soft tissue restrictions) rather than just the symptom. ACC patients pay a co-payment per session and no GP referral is required.

Understanding Knee Pain

Common Causes of Knee Pain We Treat

Knee pain rarely starts at the knee. The underlying cause is usually a biomechanical issue: running gait, hip weakness, foot pronation, or accumulated soft tissue restrictions. Identifying the root cause is what separates lasting recovery from temporary relief.

ACC Covered

Runner's Knee (Patellofemoral)

Pain at the front of the knee that worsens with stairs, running, or sitting. Caused by patellar tracking issues and quadriceps imbalance. Responds well to chiropractic adjustment combined with targeted strengthening.

ACC Covered

Meniscus Injuries

Sharp pain, swelling, or a "catching" sensation when twisting. Common in football, netball, trail running. Lower-grade tears often respond to conservative care, avoiding surgery.

ACC Covered

Ligament Strains (ACL/MCL)

Sports injuries from sudden direction changes, awkward landings, or contact. Lower-grade strains respond well to our combined chiropractic, sports acupuncture, and rehabilitation protocol.

Conservative Care

Knee Osteoarthritis

Wear and tear causing stiffness and morning pain. Sports acupuncture has Level I evidence (Vickers et al., 2018) for chronic knee pain relief without medication side effects.

Our Difference

Why North Shore Patients Choose AWC for Knee Pain

Most clinics treat knee pain with adjustments or acupuncture alone. We combine modalities under one roof, chiropractic, sports acupuncture, and rehabilitation, for a more complete biomechanical approach.

Integrated Modalities

Chiropractic, sports acupuncture, and rehabilitation under one roof, allowing your care team to combine treatments instead of working in silos.

ACC Registered

No GP referral required for knee injuries. Workplace and sports injuries fully assessed for ACC eligibility at your first visit.

Multilingual Care

Korean and Chinese-speaking practitioners available for knee consultations, serving North Shore's diverse community.

From Our Clinical Team

Why we don't recommend surgery as a first option

In our clinical experience treating knee pain in North Shore Auckland, we've seen a clear pattern: many knee surgeries can be avoided with conservative care, applied early. The 2018 systematic review in Annals of Internal Medicine (Vickers et al.) showed acupuncture provides meaningful, lasting pain relief for chronic knee pain, and the ACC Clinical Pathway for knee injuries explicitly recommends conservative management before surgical referral.

At AWC, our first visit isn't a treatment, it's a biomechanical assessment. We look at how you walk, how your hip rotates, whether your arch collapses on weight-bearing. Knee pain is almost always a downstream symptom of something upstream. Once we identify the root cause, we combine chiropractic adjustment, sports acupuncture, and targeted rehabilitation.

Common Questions

Knee Pain Treatment FAQ

Do I need a GP referral for knee treatment?
No. ACC chiropractic, sports acupuncture, and physiotherapy in NZ do not require GP referral for knee injuries. Book directly with us and we'll handle the ACC paperwork at your first visit.
Can chiropractic help with arthritic knees?
The goal is pain management and improved range of motion, not reversing arthritis. We combine gentle chiropractic with sports acupuncture (Level I evidence for knee osteoarthritis pain, Vickers et al. 2018). Many patients report reduced medication reliance.
Should I see a chiropractor or acupuncturist for knee pain?
It depends. Mechanical knee pain (runner's knee, post-injury stiffness) typically responds best to chiropractic + rehabilitation. Chronic pain and osteoarthritis benefit most from acupuncture. Our first-visit assessment determines which combination is best for you.
Will I need knee surgery?
Many knee conditions resolve without surgery when conservative care is applied early. The ACC Clinical Pathway explicitly recommends conservative management first. If we believe surgery is needed, we'll tell you honestly.
Is the clinic wheelchair accessible?
Yes. AWC Rosedale is wheelchair-accessible with ground-floor entry, accessible parking, and an accessible treatment room. Please let us know in advance if you need assistance.
Do you speak Korean or Chinese?
Yes. Korean and Chinese-speaking practitioners are available. Please request your preferred language at booking.
